"Chocolat!", a Period Musical

Theatre 10/04/2010

On the heels of the success of their first musical, the female vocal trio Divinas returns to the stage to present their new project "Chocolat!", in which a musical trio attempts to make it big in the period of the 1930s.

Under the direction of Martí Torras, "Chocolat!" sets its plotline in 1930's New York at the time of the Great Depression, a period spurred on by the 1929 stock market crash. A time of crisis and decadence in which female vocal trios litter the airwaves and fill the few stages still open. Sofía (soprano Carla Móra), Nicole (mezzo soprano Irene Ruiz) and Lulú (contralto Marta Móra) captivate with their voices and choreography, accompanied by their inseparable band of musicians, formed by clarinet player Patrick (Gabriel Amargant), pianist Jimmy (Bernat Font), double-bassist Joe (Ivan Kovacevic) and drummer William (Martí Elías). Lulú and her musicians are living the hard life, playing a club on 43rd street. One night, everything changes. An unannounced visit. A by-no-means casual encounter. Common needs. Shared excitement, the hopes and dreams of Sofía, Nicole and Lulú.

The show features a number of original songs composed by Mario Cobo and Ben Rowdon, blended with versions of the 1930's most popular classics.

The company in charge of this production is Divinas, characterised by a knack for capturing the musical style and aesthetics of yesteryear, especially from the first half of the 20th century. Inspired in the Andrews Sisters, their voices melt into a unique sound that propels the show forward with a sprinkling of humour, seduction, glamour, femininity, joviality and swing. All this underneath a meticulously prepared characterisation, setting and mise-en-scène.

"Chocolat!", which premiered on April 8, 2010, will run until this upcoming April 25.
